About Regina Optimist Baseball

Volunteer-run and community-funded, the Regina Optimist Baseball Association has been putting players on the diamond and hosting national-level tournaments since the first game was played at Optimist Park on May 16, 1963.

Where It Started

The Regina Optimist Club was chartered in December 1957. Within a year, they were sponsoring a boys' baseball team in the Regina Pony League. By 1962, talks with the City of Regina produced a plan for a dedicated park at West Dewdney and Grey Street, and development began that same year. The first official game at Optimist Park was played on May 16, 1963.

Since then, the Association has grown from a single juvenile league into one of Saskatchewan's most significant baseball organizations — operating the park, running leagues, hosting national championships, and sponsoring high school baseball for over sixteen years.

What We Do

The Regina Optimist Baseball Association organizes and promotes minor baseball in Regina and across Saskatchewan for players aged 20 and under. That means running city leagues, facilitating provincial and national competition, maintaining a top-level facility, and supporting the coaches, parents, umpires, and volunteers who make it all work.

Leagues and programs that use the park include the Regina Optimist Junior Baseball League, Midget AA and AAA, Martin Academy, Senior Leagues, Little League Saskatchewan, and the Optimist High School League. The Toronto Blue Jays have brought their Academy camp to our park multiple times, most recently in 2025.

The Park

Optimist Park sits on West Dewdney Avenue just east of the RCMP headquarters in Regina. The facility includes a grass infield, full lighting, rebuilt dugouts, padded back wall and railings, and dressing rooms. Major renovations were completed across 2012, 2018, 2019, and 2020, with ongoing maintenance carried out daily through the season.

Since 1991, the park has hosted tournaments at every level — from city and provincial championships through to Western Canadian and Baseball Canada national events. The 2005 Canada Summer Games, the 2011 Midget AAA Canadian Nationals, the 2014 North American Indigenous Games, and the 2023 and 2025 Baseball Canada tournaments were all held here.

Who Runs It

The Association is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The 2026 board includes President Jeremy Palanuik, Vice President Nolan Dezotell, Secretary Sharon Bergerman, Treasurer Jim Paisley, and Directors Rod Palanuik, Norm Loehr, John Hoffman, and Warren Pielak.

The Optimist Club of Regina is the Association's major ongoing sponsor and has been central to the organization's funding since the beginning. Without them, this park does not exist.

Get Involved

The park operates mid-May through the end of September. Registration for Junior Baseball opens online each spring. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the season — coaching, managing, and general park support.
